药元福,并州晋阳人。幼有胆气,善骑射。开运初,契丹陷甘陵,围魏郡。少帝驻军澶渊,契丹阵于城北,元福以左千牛卫将军领兵居阵东偏。澶民有马破龙者告契丹曰:“先攻其东,即浮梁可夺。“契丹信之,尽锐来战。元福奋铁挝击契丹,左右驰突,无不披靡,契丹兵溃。少帝登城,见元福力战,召抚之曰:“汝奋不顾命,虽古之忠烈无以过之。”
明年,契丹复入。命元福与李守贞等御之于阳城。晋师列方阵,设拒马为行寨。契丹以奇兵出阵后,断粮道,晋人乏水,士马饥渴,凿井未及泉,土辄坏塞,契丹顺风扬尘。诸将皆曰:“彼势甚锐,俟风反与战,破之必矣。“守贞与元福谋曰:“军中饥渴已甚,若俟风反出战,吾属为虏矣。彼谓我不能逆风以战,宜出其不意以击之,此兵家之奇也。“元福乃率麾下骑开拒马出战,诸将继至,契丹大败。
会灵武节度王令温以汉法治蕃部,西人苦之,共谋为乱,三族酋长拓跋彦超、石存、乜厮褒率众攻灵州。令温遣人间道入奏,乃以河阳节度冯晖镇朔方,召关右兵进讨,以元福将行营骑兵。元福与晖出威州土桥西,遇彦超兵七千余,邀晖行李。元福转战五十里,杀千级,禽三十余人。朔方距威州七百里,无水草,师须赍粮以行,至耀德食尽。彦超等众数万,扼要路,据水泉,以待晖军,军中大惧。元福曰:“彼知我军饥渴,邀我于险,迁延至暮,则吾党成禽矣。“晖惊曰:“奈何?“元福曰:“彼虽众而精兵绝少,元福请以麾下骑先击西山兵,公但严阵不动,俟敌少却,当举黄旗为号;旗举则合势进击,败之必矣。“晖然其策,遂率众进击,敌众果溃。
世宗高平之战,刘崇败走太原,遂纵兵围其城。以元福为同州节度。时攻具悉备,城中危急,以粮运不继,诏令班师。元福上言曰进军甚易退军甚难世宗曰一以委卿遂部分卒伍为方阵而南元福以麾下为后殿崇果出兵来追元福击走之。
