药元福，并州晋阳人。幼有胆气，善骑射。开运初，契丹陷甘陵，围魏郡。少帝驻军澶渊，契丹阵于城北，元福以左千牛卫将军领兵居阵东偏。澶民有马破龙者告契丹曰：“先攻其东，即浮梁可夺。“契丹信之，尽锐来战。元福奋铁挝击契丹，左右驰突，无不披靡，契丹兵溃。少帝登城，见元福力战，召抚之曰：“汝奋不顾命，虽古之忠烈无以过之。”
