The Dragon Boat Festival
The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese festival that is celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar. It is a time when people honor and remember the great poet Qu Yuan and participate in various festive activities.
One of the most famous customs during the Dragon Boat Festival is the dragon boat races. These races symbolize the search for Qu Yuan's body in the river. Teams of rowers paddle in long, narrow boats while a drummer sits at the front of the boat, beating a drum to set the rhythm. It is an exhilarating and competitive event that attracts both participants and spectators from all over the country.
Another important tradition of the Dragon Boat Festival is eating zongzi, a sticky rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo leaves. Zongzi can be filled with a variety of ingredients such as beans, meats, and nuts. It is believed that eating zongzi can ward off evil spirits and bring good luck. Making zongzi is a time-consuming process that requires skill and patience. Families often gather together to make zongzi and share them with friends and relatives.
Apart from dragon boat races and eating zongzi, there are many other customs associated with the Dragon Boat Festival. One of them is hanging up pouches of herbs called xiong huang. These pouches are believed to repel evil spirits and protect people from diseases. People also wear colorful silk threads around their wrists to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune. Additionally, children often make and wear colorful silk threads around their necks to protect themselves from evil.
The Dragon Boat Festival is not only a time for celebration but also an opportunity for people to learn about and appreciate Chinese culture. It is a festival that brings people together, strengthens family bonds, and promotes a sense of community. Whether it is watching the thrilling dragon boat races, enjoying the delicious zongzi, or participating in other customs, the Dragon Boat Festival is an event that should not be missed.

The Legend of Qu Yuan
The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is celebrated in honor of the great poet Qu Yuan. Qu Yuan was a loyal minister during the Warring States period in ancient China. He was known for his love for his country and his people.
Qu Yuan was born into a noble family in the state of Chu. He was well-educated and had a deep understanding of politics and literature. He served as a minister in the court and offered valuable advice to the king. However, his ideas were often rejected, and he was eventually banished from the court.
During his exile, Qu Yuan wrote many beautiful poems expressing his love for his country and his sadness at its current state. He believed that the state of Chu was being threatened by other powerful states and that it needed to unite in order to survive. However, his warnings were ignored, and the state of Chu continued to decline.
In 278 BC, the capital of Chu was captured by the state of Qin. Qu Yuan, unable to bear the defeat of his beloved country, drowned himself in the Miluo River. The people of Chu were devastated by the news of his death and rushed to the river to search for his body. They beat drums and threw rice dumplings into the river to feed the fish and prevent them from eating Qu Yuan's body.
Since then, the Dragon Boat Festival has been celebrated every year to remember Qu Yuan and his sacrifice. Dragon boat races are held to symbolize the search for his body, and zongzi is eaten to remember the rice dumplings that were thrown into the river. The festival is also a time for people to reflect on Qu Yuan's patriotism and to appreciate the beauty of his poetry.
The legend of Qu Yuan reminds us of the importance of loyalty and love for our country. It teaches us to cherish our heritage and to work together to build a better future. The Dragon Boat Festival is not just a time for celebration but also a time for reflection and gratitude.
