在森林中，鸟儿经常会被猎人结束生命，也经常会遭到其它动物的惊吓，有一天，鸟儿们决定选出百鸟之王。
地点是一棵参天大树——白桦树，消息一发出，成千上万的鸟儿立刻飞向那棵白桦树。鸟儿们七嘴八舌，过了好久才静下来，裁判终于登场了，是猫头鹰博士和杜鹃小姐，参加评选的鸟儿各式各样，有老鹰、喜鹊、孔雀。
评选开始了，经过激烈的评比，老鹰、喜鹊、孔雀进入了前三名。先是老鹰发言，老鹰用那响亮的声音说：“各位女士们，先生们大家好。我特点是能在几千米高空飞翔，能保护大家，我还有超强的视力，能让大家快速逃离危险。”说完便向天空冲去。再是孔雀，孔雀骄傲地说：“我的优点大家都清楚吧，那就是漂亮。”然后孔雀就跳了一支舞，表演精彩极了。然后是喜鹊，喜鹊说：“大家好，我的特点是会唱优美的歌曲，能让大家快乐，请大家选我吧，谢谢！”接着，喜鹊唱了一支优美的歌曲。
裁判发言了：老鹰虽然能保护我们，但是对我们有一定的危险，喜鹊没有保护我们的能力，孔雀太傲慢了。
说完，现场议论纷纷，这时，凤凰出现了，它长着一对宽大的翅膀，火焰般的羽毛，像一位勇士！鸟儿们见了，立刻说：“凤凰，凤凰，百鸟之王！”凤凰被选上百鸟之王后，他认真地管理着鸟群。

在一个百花齐放、五彩缤纷的春天，小草长出了嫩芽，蝴蝶在花丛中飞来飞去，天空中小燕子自由自在地飞翔，鸟儿们在这个春暖花开的季节又迎来了凤凰鸟的生日。这天，许许多多的鸟儿们都来给凤凰鸟祝寿，孔雀小姐也来了。它并没有给凤凰鸟献羽毛，而是站在一边骄傲地对孔雀说：“你有什么了不起的，不就是当了个鸟王吗？要说比漂亮，那你肯定比不过我。”一些小鸟听了这话，可不服气了：“你别在那自吹自擂，凤凰鸟救了我们，而且也挺漂亮的。你呢，除了会吹嘘自己外，你为我们做过什么贡献，你能和我们的鸟王比吗？”孔雀
