A：你知道每年农历七月十五是什么日子吗？
B：Of course! 是中元节，也是中国的鬼节。
A：Yes, you are right! 那你知道国外的鬼节是几月几号吗？ B: Oh, sorry, I don’t know.
A: Let me tell you! 每年的November 1st 11月1日是西方传统的“鬼节”——万圣节。October 31st,,10月31日是万圣节前夕，通常叫做万圣夜，英语叫Halloween。不过这一天的气氛，却远不像它的名称那样，让人听上去就“毛骨悚然”。
B：Yes, Halloween is a very happy day, 在那天晚上，小孩会穿上各种各样稀奇古怪的化妆服，戴上面具，提着南瓜灯，挨家挨户地去要糖果，不停地说：“trick- or -treat”（意思是不给糖就捣蛋，要是你不肯给糖果的话，孩子们就会很生气，用各种方法去惩罚你，例如：把垃圾倒在你家里等等的方法，直到你肯给他们糖果为止。
A：南瓜灯的英语你知道是什么吗？

B：Yes, 把南瓜雕空当灯笼的故事，是源于古代爱尔兰。故事说有一个名叫 Jack 的人，为人既吝啬，又喜欢恶作剧，还经常喝得醉醺醺
的.。一天 Jack喝醉了，碰见了一个恶魔，他把恶魔骗到了树上，随即在树桩上刻了个十字，让恶魔无法从树桩上下来，并恐吓恶魔答应他提出的条件，一番讨价还价之后，恶魔和JACK达成了协议，恶魔答应施法让JACK无论做什么，法律都无法制裁他。JACK 死后，由于他是和恶魔做过交易的人，在人世时又品行不端，所以他的灵魂却既不能上天又不能下地狱，于是他的亡灵只好靠一根小蜡烛照着，并指引他在天地之间倘佯。
A：本来在古老的爱尔兰传说中，这根小蜡烛是放在一根挖空的萝卜里，称作“Jack Lantern”，据说爱尔兰人到了美国不久，即发现南瓜不论从来源和雕刻来说都比萝卜胜一筹，而且外形也比萝卜漂亮，而且接近脸的形状，于是南瓜灯就逐渐代替了萝卜灯成为万圣节的宠物，也因此，南瓜灯又叫杰克灯（Jack-O-Lantern）。值得一提的是，由于南瓜灯是万圣节的标志，而南瓜是橘红色的，因此，万圣节的标志颜色就是橘红色。
